Joint injections, where medication is delivered directly into the joint, are commonly used to maintain soundness in equine athletes. Hyaluronic acid and corticosteroids are the most frequently administered medications. Recently, regenerative or biologic products have become available that are typically more effective and safer for long-term joint health than corticosteroids. Ultrasound guidance is often used to ensure accurate placement challenging joints including necks, backs, and hocks and stifles.
